CATAP 2017 Annual Conference and Workshop (La Malbaie, Quebec)
Bram Van de Meer - Interviewing in a Threat Assessment Context
In threat assessment practice people often possess critical information that is not recorded in any other source of information. This makes the interview one of the most important methods of information gathering. But, the interview is also one of the areas where most mistakes are made, because people and their behaviour are contextual and dynamic in nature. Behaviour is often misinterpreted or miscommunicated and the interviewer not always successful in remaining the objective ‘fact finder’.
This 2-day workshop will help identify such pitfalls and difficulties that practitioners run into during their data collection. Participants will learn specific skills and techniques that will enable them to conduct more effective interviews and generate useful information from those they assess.
An important focus of the training lies on establishing rapport, and influencing circumstances in such a way that the interviewee is willing to release very personal or stressful information. What makes the threat assessment interview exceptional and interesting, but also challenging and sometimes difficult, is the fact that the interviewer has to find a workable balance between, on the one hand - establishing a supportive and friendly climate, and on the other, holding a critical, objective approach. Because, no matter how skilled and successful the interviewer is in establishing a working alliance, the resultant threat assessment will be flawed, incomplete, and inaccurate if the assessor fails to generate reliable statements and clear, useful data.
The presenter will combine latest research findings with recent case examples and interview experiences. Through role plays and practical casework participants will be invited to find creative ways of gathering important information from unwilling or difficult persons. Personality traits can create obstacles for an effective interview. Participants will learn to recognise and objectively describe character traits and indications of more serious psychiatric disorder. They will work in groups and make investigative decisions on when and how to interview specific individuals in the process.
